Halfes is a wine importer of Greek red and white wines from Markou in Athens. Markou Winery (in Greek: Αμπελώνες Μάρκου) is located in the Greek wine region of Attica, near Athens. Winemaker Vasilis runs the organic family business together with his niece Maria. Together with their cousins, they represent the fourth generation of the company. Located in the heart of Attica, near Athens, Greece, Markou Vineyards combines ancient Greek wine culture with modern techniques to produce unique, high-quality wines. They mainly work with indigenous Greek grape varieties. The typical Greek grapes they have planted are Savatiano, Malagousia, Agiorgitiko, and Mandilaria.
Markou's Organic Wines from Athens
Their grandfather Spyros started making Retsina from a small vineyard. Retsina is still made by the winery. Vasilis and Maria Markou wanted to take a new direction with their wines: new and modern labels, and a modern style of wine are part of this process. They produce about 180,000 bottles on 50 hectares. At Markou Vineyards, the focus is on quality and authenticity. In the Greek vineyards, located in the rich soils of Spata and Nemea, some of the best grape varieties are produced, such as Savatiano, Agiorgitiko, and Assyrtiko. These grapes are carefully selected and hand-harvested to ensure that only the best fruits are used for our wines.
Unique Wines from Greece
"The great thing about this winery is how easy it is to get to from the center of Athens. You take the metro to the airport and get off at the last city stop. After a 15-minute walk, you're at the Markou Wine Museum. Now, 2 PM with 36 degrees might not be the most ideal time for a 15-minute walk. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I not only tasted the wines but also learned why we don't know Greek red and white wines (especially from Athens) at all. We ate fruits de mer in a typical white Greek restaurant with blue shutters by the sea. Next life Greece" - Jasper Smit
