Antonio Dinis Teoria winemaker Portugal Douro Valley

Rosa and António (1974) continued their vineyard at Rosa's family's location after António had been a winemaker for other vineyards and a laboratory technician at the Institute for Vinho Verde (CVRVV) for years. On their 6-hectare vineyard, they make classic wines as found in the Douro. Besides being a winemaker for himself, António is a freelancer for other vineyards and Rosa manages the B&B.

The vineyards have been in Rosa's family for hundreds of years. She grew up in the (old) house. In 2010, Rosa and António built the current house on the foundations of the old house. Their vineyards are surrounded by olive trees that serve as a boundary. Naturally, they make their own olive oil from these. On their land, there are more than 60 (!) different grape varieties from which they make wine. This is a so-called field blend. Which plant is where is not entirely known. Most of their vines date from the period between 1930 and 1945.

Red and white wines from Portugal

"The wine region that captivated me the most by far is the Douro Valley in Portugal. And not in spring or summer, but precisely in the autumn months, when the harvest has just finished. The leaves then turn all colors between dark red and light yellow. A fascinating view, with complete silence. Rosa & António's bed & breakfast completes the experience. I was allowed to taste port vintage 1964, vintage 1988, and vintage 2020 (which had just been bottled then) and was sold. The Portuguese Douro truly is the most beautiful wine region in the world. Their wines are magnificent, especially the wines they make from old vines, which Rosa's grandfather planted in the 1940s. When I got to know them, I actually had very little idea of the still wines from the Douro, but they are perhaps even more unique than the port wines from the valley." - Jasper Smit
