The wines of Sina Mertz

Sina Mertz (1990) took over her father's winery in 2016. The family has lived in Eckelsheim (Kreis Alzey, Rheinhessen), Germany, for generations. While her grandparents still had a farm with pigs, grain, and grapes, Sina's father chose to focus entirely on viticulture. Sina embraced her father's choice with both hands. After her studies and internships abroad, she fully dedicated herself to viticulture and the wines of her heimat: Eckelsheim in Rheinhessen.
Sina studied oenology at the Hochschule in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse. She did voluntary internships in Chile and California (with Kendall-Jackson). The soil in Eckelsheim is unique. Porphyry rock full of fossilized seafood. On about 11 hectares, typical German grape varieties such as Riesling, SpΓ€tburgunder, Weissburgunder, Grauburgunder, and the Scheurebe grape, unique to Rheinhessen, are planted. In addition, she has started experimenting with international grape varieties such as Chardonnay.
Elegant German wines from Rheinhessen
The wines of Sina Mertz are unique. Her German wines from the Rheinhessen wine region are elegant, yet also very distinctive. Sina works from core principles: People, collaboration with parents Carmen and Gunter. Labor, craft, manual work, and spontaneity. Nature, ecological intervention, respect for soil and terroir. The vineyards are on porphyry-rich soils with calcareous marl, a reflection of the Rheinhessen terroir.
Sina allows the wines to mature for a long time for complexity and finesse, a signature praised by both Eichelmann and Vinum: "blitzsaubere Kollektion ohne SchwΓ€chen" (impeccable collection without weaknesses). The 2018 SpΓ€tburgunder "Eckelsheimer Kirchberg" was lauded for its "cooler notes with a typical dark berry aroma." In 2024, she received the title Next Generation Winzerin from Gault&Millau.
