The wines of Adega do Vulcão

The Azores is the last place you'd think of when considering Portuguese wines. Yet, they produce truly exceptional wines from unique grape varieties planted only on this Portuguese archipelago. Adega do Vulcão is unique. Not only because of its location – they are the only ones making wine on Faial Island – but also because they are the only ones producing a red wine in the Azores, and they boast Europe's westernmost vineyard. The unique soil, rugged climate, and special grapes make Guido's wines individually distinct.

Wines from Pico & Faial

Guido has been cultivating wines on the islands of Faial and Pico for almost his entire life. This Italian native, like his parents, fell in love with the Azores and started making wine there. At a young age, they emigrated from Florence to the remote island of Faial. At that time, Gianni and Cinzia had no plans to cultivate grapes. A friend advised them to plant grapes, but not just on Faial Island. If they wanted to become a serious player in Azorean wine, they also had to start making wine on Pico Island. By leasing and then buying vineyards there, they expanded their operations. After several years, the grapes from Faial Island were also good enough to be used for wine. While Pico wines have a rugged style, the terroir of Faial lends finesse to the two wines they produce there.

The vineyards of Adega do Vulcão benefit from the mineral richness of the volcanic soil, which imparts a distinctive freshness and complexity to the grapes. This results in wines that are not only full-bodied but also tell a unique story of their rugged yet fertile environment. The volcanic wines of the Azores are known for their vibrant acidity and mineral undertones, thanks to the influence of the ocean and volcanic soil. These wines offer a perfect balance between fresh, citrusy aromas and the salinity typical of wines from maritime regions. They provide a distinct experience, where every sip brings the unique terroir of the Azores to life.

"The Azores are one of the most magical places you can visit in Europe. Just over a 3-hour flight towards America lies this unique archipelago full of volcanic islands. The islands of Pico and Faial (comparable in size to Schiermonnikoog), where Adega do Vulcão makes their wines, together have only 30,000 inhabitants. Very small, but with incredibly beautiful producers. The weather can change every day, which makes it unique and the wine special. My most beautiful memory: certainly the stories and also the passion, but the whales you can see from the vineyard. We saw them very far in the distance. But the videos of a whale jumping out of the water at 300, 400 meters, that is magical. And so are the Azores." - Jasper Smit
