Winemaker António Maçanita & James Frost
Background Quinta de Sant’Ana is located just a 30-minute drive north of Lisbon. The winery is run by James Frost and António Maçanita, who produce organic wines on calcareous clay soil. António’s original and sometimes daring approach results in wines that are both traditional and surprisingly innovative for Portugal.
Vineyards Organic and in conversion to biodynamic. Gently sloping, south-facing, with deep, fertile soils. The vineyards are close to the Atlantic Ocean. This offers ideal conditions for the production of refined and fresh wines with a distinct character.
Harvest Manual
Vinification Arinto ripens moderately to late. Whole clusters are gently pressed with a pneumatic press to obtain the best juice. Fermentation takes place at cellar temperature in a mix of old and new barrels, using both indigenous and selected yeasts. The wine ages for 24 months in barrels, with bâtonnage only during topping up. Afterwards, the wine is transferred to a horizontal stainless steel tank, where it ages for another ten months on the lees before bottling.
