Claret
Adega do Vulcão
Clarete 2023
This light red wine is special: a light style with volcanic flavors. Its soft red color gives it its name: Clarete. The nose is dominated by intense notes of red fruit like strawberry, with subtle mineral accents like graphite. On the palate, the wine is light, fresh, and elegant, with an invigorating, well-balanced acidity. The minerality lingers long on the finish.

Winemaker Guido Mancassola with the help of Alberto Antonini
Background Adega do Vulcão is located on the remote Azores islands of Pico and Faial, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. The winery is run by Guido and Alberto, who focus on volcanic soils and indigenous grape varieties. Their dedication to sustainable and minimal intervention in the vineyard results in wines that are pure and powerfully reflect the character of their origin.
Vineyards The vines grow on black lava soil, often within ancient stone walls, just a few hundred meters from the ocean. The extreme conditions yield wines that are saline, energetic, and full of character. Pico's volcanic soil has a beautiful effect on the Syrah and Merlot. The vineyards are low-lying, about 50 to 150 meters above sea level. The influence of the Atlantic Ocean is significant. The vineyards are in conversion to organic.
Harvest Manual
Vinification Low intervention. The grapes are carefully selected in the vineyard and transported in small crates to the cellar, where they are destemmed and cold-soaked for three days in stainless steel tanks. Fermentation then starts in concrete 'eggs' with indigenous yeasts, at a maximum temperature of 25 degrees Celsius, to preserve as much fruit as possible. The wine ages for twelve months in concrete tanks.
