Winemakers António Maçanita & James Frost

Background Quinta de Sant’Ana is located just a 30-minute drive north of Lisbon. The winery is run by James Frost and António Maçanita, who produce organic wines on calcareous clay soil. António’s original and sometimes daring approach results in wines that are both traditional and surprisingly innovative for Portugal. The vineyards are close to the Atlantic Ocean, providing ideal conditions for the production of refined and fresh wines with a distinct character.

Vineyards The vineyards are organic and in conversion to biodynamic viticulture. The vines are trellised using the Smart-Dyson method and run from east to west. This method, where the branches grow both upwards and downwards, ensures optimal sunlight exposure.

Harvest Manual

Vinification Gentle and cold pressing (7 degrees Celsius) of whole grape clusters with a pneumatic press to extract the best juice for 24 hours. The wines, like all wines from Quinta de Sant'Ana, ferment with indigenous yeasts. The wine ages for 10 months, with 80% of the wine aging at a low temperature (12 to 14 degrees Celsius) in a stainless steel tank. The other 20% ages in wooden barrels, where the wine ages sur lie with bâtonnage.
