Winemaker Vasilis & Maria Markou

Background Markou Winery is located in the Greek wine region of Attica, near Athens. Winemaker Vasilis runs the organic family business together with his niece Maria. Together, they represent the fourth generation of the company. They primarily work with indigenous grape varieties. Their grandfather Spyros started making Retsina from a small vineyard. Vasilis and Maria have embarked on a new path with their wines: new and modern labels, and a contemporary style of wines. They produce about 180,000 bottles across 50 hectares.

Vineyards The vineyards are in conversion to organic farming. Over 60-year-old vines. Vineyards on flat clay soils near Athens benefit from warm days and cooling breezes from the surrounding hills. 50 to 100 meters above sea level. The Savatiano vines are on average 60 years old. The climate is Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and mild winters. The sea and hills provide cooling, preserving the freshness and balance in the grapes.

Vinification The grapes ferment at a low temperature of 17 degrees Celsius. To preserve purity and freshness, the wine ages for four months in stainless steel tanks.
