Capelinhos
Adega do Vulcão
Capelinhos 2023
The wine label shows the eruption of the Capelinhos volcano. The last eruption of this stratovolcano was in 1957/58 and lasted for over a year. This wine is the westernmost wine in Europe and the only wine produced entirely on Faial island. Unique is an understatement. Masterful! A true delight in your glass in terms of taste!
A bottle full of history. After the eruption of the Capelinhos, a then relatively unknown senator from Massachusetts initiated the Azorean Refugee Act. The road where the visitor center for the volcano is located is named after him. The visitor center is on Rua John F. Kennedy.

Background Adega do Vulcão is located on the remote Azores islands of Pico and Faial, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. The winery is run by Guido and Alberto, who focus on volcanic soils and indigenous grape varieties. Their dedication to sustainable and minimal intervention in the vineyard ensures wines that are pure and powerfully reflect the character of their origin. The vines grow on black lava soil, often within centuries-old stone walls, only a few hundred meters from the ocean. The extreme conditions produce wines that are saline, energetic, and full of character.
Soil Volcanic
Altitude 50 to 150 meters above sea level
Vineyards In 2016, seven hectares of vineyard were planted in the axis of an old eruption (1957). The black earth close to the sea and the unique volcanic terroir create a special wine. The soil is rich in minerals, perfectly draining, and benefits from a unique microclimate. Only indigenous grape varieties are planted, as a tribute to their origin. Due to the high average temperature and humidity in the Azores, active pruning is carried out throughout the year.
